Dean knew there was something huge that was making Sam desperate to avoid sleeping, and since there also seemed to be something preventing Sam from talking about anything, dream root seemed like the logical next step. Dean was really not buying all the lies Lucifer was making Sam spew. Awesome Dean is awesome. :)
